Rep. Delgado Helps to Secure VA Adaptive Sports Grant for SUNY Cobleskill Therapeutic Horsemanship Program
COBLESKILL, NY – Today, U.S. Representative Antonio Delgado (NY-19) announced a $112,000 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Adaptive Sports Grant for the SUNY Cobleskill Therapeutic Horsemanship Program. The federal award will allow the college to assist more veterans through equine therapy by offering additional therapy sessions, acquiring a lift chair to raise wheelchair bound vets on to horses, and purchasing additional horses. Rep. Delgado wrote a letter of support for SUNY Cobleskill to help them secure this grant funding.
“We must honor our promise to our veterans and ensure they have the resources needed to fully recover and adapt following their service to our country. I was proud to help SUNY Cobleskill secure this federal grant that will invest in their critical therapeutic horsemanship programs and allow the college to offer these services to more of our nation’s heroes,” said Rep. Antonio Delgado. “These innovative programs are critically important to our veterans reintroduction and recovery. I’m glad to support investments in SUNY Cobleskill and look forward to seeing these expanded equine activities in action.”
“We appreciate the support of Congressman Delgado in our application for the VA Adaptive Sports Grant. The grant award allows SUNY Cobleskill Therapeutic Horsemanship Program to provide expanded equine assisted activities and therapies for Veterans in the region and to provide students additional learning opportunities to be able to better serve Veterans,” said Margaret R. Mansfield, Associate Professor of Therapeutic Horsemanship, State University of New York at Cobleskill.
The Adaptive Sports Grant Program is run by the National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events Office (NVSP&SE) at the VA. The mission of this office is to provide opportunities for veterans to improve their independence, well-being, and quality of life through adaptive sports and therapeutic arts programs. The VA awards grants to qualifying organizations to plan, develop, manage, and implement programs to provide adaptive sports opportunities for disabled Veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces.
