Delgado’s Visit Focused on Coronavirus Preparations and Response Measures in Rural Communities

SWAN LAKE, NY – This afternoon, U.S. Representative Antonio Delgado (NY-19) visited the Sullivan County Emergency Services Training Center in Swan Lake to learn more about its work to prepare our communities for the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The Congressman’s visit was led by Deputy County Manager John Liddle and included county officials focused on emergency response, preparedness and communications.  During the visit, the Congressman and county officials discussed the county’s work to prepare for the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure the community has necessary resources including ventilators, protective masks, test kids, and facilities to hold patients. The Congressman committed to continuing to advocate for resources tailored to rural communities during these challenging times.

“The COVID-19 outbreak reaches every one of our communities, and I thank the good folks at the Sullivan Emergency Services Training Center for their work to prepare and respond to this growing public health pandemic. Today’s tour included an important look at how Sullivan is preparing its health facilities and making sure families and working folks in our area have access to meals and needed social services during these unpreceded times. I am thankful for the opportunity to hear from the experts in Sullivan County about how they’re adjusting their facilities and preparations following the declaration of a county-wide emergency.” said Rep. Delgado. “Today’s conversations will continue to inform my work at the federal level to ensure rural communities have resources tailored to their specific needs. There is much more work to be done in concert with local, state and federal leaders to make sure our region is supported during this public health pandemic—and I’m committed to working alongside partners at every level as we get through this together.”

“We are grateful to the Congressman for his visit,” said Deputy County Manager John Liddle, commander of the County's Incident Command System team. “His support buoyed our spirits and was a welcome reminder that we have tireless allies in this ongoing challenge.”

Last weekend, Rep. Delgado visited the Ulster County Coronavirus Hotline Call Center in Kingston. At the end of last week, Rep. Delgado joined a broad, bipartisan coalition in voting for H.R. 6201, the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which provides direct support for families during this pandemic. This legislation will provide essential services to assist working families and seniors across upstate New York during the COVID-19 pandemic including increasing access to needed Coronavirus tests, giving workers the ability to stay at home if they’re sick, and providing children and seniors with continued food security during these challenging times.

Rep. Delgado also introduced the bipartisan Pandemic Response and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act, to help prepare our communities for the economic impacts of the coronavirus. The bill would expand the menu of benefits available under federal Emergency Declarations to include critical nutrition assistance, unemployment assistance for unemployed and self-employed individuals, legal services, crisis counseling, and case management.

The New York State Coronavirus Hotline is 1-888-364-3065.
